E-mail List

Hi families!

Some parents have asked to connect with other parents via e-mail to set up some virtual play dates/video chats to say hello! If you would like your e-mail added to the list, please send me an e-mail at mpliura@hwdsb.on.ca by Tuesday, May 5th and let me know that I can share your e-mail address with other parents. If parents agree, I will create a master list and e-mail it to everyone on Wednesday May 6th :)

Communication Reminder

Hi families,

I kindly ask that you remind yourselves of communication within the HWDSB:

I ask that if you have any questions about your child or my programming, that you please speak with me first before going to administration. I am only an e-mail away (mpliura@hwdsb.on.ca) and am quick and happy to respond to your questions or concerns.

Weekly Challenge

Hi parents,

It was my turn to make the weekly kinder challenge this week, so instead of posting daily activities, this week I'll just be using this. These are ideas I would have been using for daily activities anyway! I will still be posting other things, checking my e-mail regularly, and looking at progress on raz kids. Please feel free to e-mail me whenever, with any questions you have.

PS: I just realized I can listen to your child reading their books on Raz kids without assigning them an assessment, so I will be doing that more often. You will see a response in your messages with some extra star rewards!

Have a great weekend!

Picture Post!

Here are some pictures and videos of our friends from this week. Great job everyone! :) It's so good to see your faces!

Miss Pliura's Day!

Here are some pictures of what Miss Pliura has been doing at home! I hope the kids enjoy :)

Everyday I do some "teaching" from home! I reply to e-mails, make videos, plan activities, and chat with other Kindergarten teachers!

I've been paying extra attention to my two cats, Darwin and Marmalade! They love to play, and eat!! :)

They say hello!

Everyday I do lots of cleaning, but that's ok because I love to do it! I hope you're cleaning up after yourselves too!

I've been learning lots of new recipes to cook! (Yes the photo on the left was staged lol it was early)

Everyday I video chat with my family in Germany. My sister, niece, and brother-in-law live there. My niece's name is Tessa! She's almost 2! They're supposed to be moving back in July, but that will probably be on hold :( My sister is a Kindergarten teacher too. She used to teach at Gatestone!

And I am ALWAYS thinking about you guys! I miss you so much and I wish we could be back in the classroom together, learning and playing. I miss your smiles and enthusiasm for learning. I can't wait to give you all a big hug <3 I love you so much!

Take a Deep Breath!

Hi everyone!

I hope you are all staying safe and healthy :) I wanted to take a minute, just incase you are feeling overwhelmed, to remind you of a couple of things:

1) I am never going to judge you for what you do and don't do. This is completely new territory for us. You all have different, unique situations at home, and I know everyone is doing the best they can. Please don't ever worry about that. I don't have kids of my own, so I can't even begin to imagine what you're going through. I'm not saying my opinion matters a great deal to you, but just know that I know you are trying your best. And I'm doing my best too!

2) Please don't feel stressed out, or like you have to do something every minute of every day. Do what you can. I don't want you to feel overwhelmed with what I'm posting. Just use what works for you!

3) Students are not being marked on what they're doing right now. I can not formally assess what's happening at home, so don't stress. We are still waiting on direction in terms of report cards, but I do know that we are using marks from before March break.

If you need anything from me, please e-mail me at mpliura@hwdsb.on.ca. I check my e-mail regularly and will respond to you between the hours of 8-3:30, Monday to Friday (sometimes at night, depends on how I feel lol)

Announcements & Picture Post!

1) I will be contacting families that said they needed an iPad at some point today, Friday April 17th. I know some of you haven't, so I will bring this to the attention of my principal. We have a virtual Kindergarten meeting today.

2) I can't make e-mail notifications of blog posts come to you immediately. It only allows me to do it during certain times. It's SO annoying. Therefore, I have scheduled all posts to come to you e-mail between 5-7 am :)

3) Here are some pictures of Ziibii, Weston, and Navraj doing lots of fun work and activities at home. I will post pictures every Friday. This is optional, but fun :) E-mail them to me at mpliura@hwdsb.on.ca. I miss all of your faces! There's some good ideas in here too! <3

I'll also be posting some pictures of what I'm doing at home- thanks for the good idea Ziibii ;)

Wednesday April 15th

Hi families,

You will need to watch this video so you understand what to do for today's literacy activity.

A brief summary:

- Segmenting means to break a word up into it's smallest sounds
- CVC words stand for consonant, vowel, consonant
- Vowels are A,E,I,OU, consonants are the rest!

Here's a list of CVC words you can use:

cat, wet, hot, cut, pop, jet, tip, pad, wag, sat, gap, can, leg, jog

Avoid using words with the "an" sound. This can get confusing for them, as "an" can't really be broken up. If that's too easy, have them connect the sounds to letters in the alphabet. Or ask them questions like, "What's the middle sound in that word?", or "In the word "leg", where is the /e/ sound?"

Gatestone Says Hello! :)

Hi families!

Here is a video with some "hellos" from staff, made by yours truly ;) I hope this brings a smile to your little one's face!

A couple notes:

  • I know my subscription emails don't get to your inbox for awhile after I've posted them. I'm working through this. I may have to change subscription programs. In the meantime, please check the blog every morning for daily activities.
  • I would love to see your kiddos playing at home, or even better, doing some work! I think all of our students would love to see pictures of their friends, too. If you would like to e-mail me some pictures of them, I would be happy to post them on the blog. My e-mail is mpliura@hwdsb.on.ca

Announcement: Learning at Home!

Hi everyone!

Hope you all are well :) I was thinking a lot over the weekend on how to make this whole experience easy, manageable, and work for everyone. I've decided to do two different things (yay, differentiation!). I understand that this is going to look different for everyone at home, based on your current job situation, number of children, access to technology, etc.

We are waiting to hear when iPads and technology will be delivered to families. Once I know, I will let you know.

The Ministry has said for Kindergarten that a minimum of 5 hours a week should be done by students, so an hour a day for a 5 day school week (I will adjust this week due to the holiday). The focus should be literacy and math. However, Kindergarten is quite different than the other grades, so I will be adding a couple of different things :)

Choose your own adventure ;) aka choose what works best for you! Please don't stress. That's the last thing we all need right now.

1. Learn At Your Own Pace Weekly Schedule:

I will post a weekly schedule that the Kindergarten team has worked on. You can use this as a reference to get ideas, do as few or as many activities as you want, and do them at a time that's most convenient for you.

2. Follow the Daily Schedule:

This is if you're looking for something a bit more structured. I will post this every day so it's ready for you before 9 am. It will have more specific learning goals, videos, etc. You definitely don't have to follow the schedule and timing. Do it whenever you can.

Chat soon!

Update

Hi everyone,

After our staff meeting today, the Kindergarten team met (virtually) to come up with some activities to do week-by-week. I'm also personally working on a "schedule" that you can use at home to help with keeping your little one organized. This will be up and running by early next week. In the meantime, keep happy and healthy <3 Have a nice weekend!

Mathematics: Our Favourite Videos!

Here are some of our favourite Jack Hartmann videos that we watch during our daily math. These should bring a sense of familiarity to your child. See how fast they can subitize, and if they get the answer right!

Literacy: Raz Kids!

Hi everyone! While we navigate through these crazy times together, I wanted to have something for your kids to do at home. I want to reiterate, do not stress out. These are unprecedented times and we're all in this together. I am working on some things at the moment to take the load off your shoulders as best as I can.

Raz kids is a free online reading program. Watch the video I made below to learn how to sign up!
