Character Education: Reflection of the Day!

Over the past few weeks, our class has been setting a goal every day- something we can work on and get better at. I'm a huge believer in self-reflection and it's so rewarding to see students reflect on their own behaviour. We're not quite there, but we will be soon! For example, our goal for the day might be to use our manners, be responsible, or use our listening ears. We do multiple check ins during the day to remind students what our goal is. If I think they did a good job, they get a heart in their chart. Soon, students will help to decide :) When we get to 10 hearts, we get a special reward. Today we reached 10 hearts, woohoo! We achieved our daily goal 10/12 days :) When we don't meet it, we just work on it again the next day!

Our class voted on having an extra recess, so that's exactly what we're doing tomorrow! We will even bring our the tricycles. I'll be sure to take lots of pictures :) Feel free to ask your child what the goal for today was, and if we met it or not! Happy reflecting :)

General Happenings: Weekly Art and Picture Post!

Here are some photos from our week so far! For our weekly art activity, students could choose to participate in some Halloween paint stamping!

Mathematics: Counting!

Today we started our daily math! Every day as a part of our morning routine, we will dedicate 5-10 minutes to math. During our daily math, we only focus on number sense (counting, estimating, more or less, etc.) We will explore other concepts of math such as shapes during other math lessons.

Today we started with something basic- counting objects! In the teacher world, we call this "one-to-one correspondence". This means that a child knows that every time you touch an object, you count it. If there are 3 objects, we count 3. Our oral counting has to match physically touching the object. Today we went over a couple of things:

1. We always start with the number 1!
2. We have to keep track of where we're counting to avoid counting the same object twice. We try to count in a "path", or use something call "tag and drag", where you physically move the object to account for it.
3. The last number we say is how many there are. This is called cardinality. For example, we counted 9 objects all together.... how many are there?

There are a lot of ways to practise this at home! Try counting your toys. Have your child help you set up for dinner... if there are 4 people in our family, how many plates will we need?

It's important that students can 'rote' count (verbally), but we need to move past this and connect it with a quantity. What does 8 really look like? How about 6? Explore this more at home, and we will obviously keep practising in class!

General Happenings: Todd Parr Portraits!

Our Todd Parr inspired art is all finished! It took us all week, but they turned out amazing! Believe it or not, most of it was done by the students, with a little extra help and some strategic planning from Miss Pliura ;) Students were able to choose whichever hairstyle, eyes, mouth, and colours they wanted, with no expectation of them looking like them. We will hang these up in our room and send them home at the end of the year! :) The pictures of them holding them are too much!
