Yesterday for Candy Cane Day, we did an experiment, a secret candy cane craft and went on a candy cane hunt! For our experiment, we put candy canes into different liquids to see what would happen. The students loved watching the candy canes change! In the hot water, the candy cane dissolved and the water turned red. In cold water, the red stripes started to come off and the water turned red. In vinegar, the stripes came off and looked stringy but the red colour separated and stayed at the bottom. By the end of the afternoon all the candy canes had dissolved and only the cold water smelt like peppermint!
We made some predictions before we started the experiment:
Olivia- I think the water will turn the colour of a candy cane.
Ema-The candy cane might change colour.
Jackson- It might explode.
E-It might fizz in the vinegar.
