Our Current Inquiry: Coding, Coding, Coding!

Last week our weekly STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) challenge was Minecraft related. The goal was to create a code to get Steve from Minecraft to the diamonds without bumping into any obstacles. One wrong turn and you'd be facing the creeper or the TNT! Students had to place the arrows in a way that would allow him to get there safely! We started off with some screen-free coding to get them introduced to it.

We realized pretty quickly that the turns made it too challenging, so we switched over to straight arrows :)

Maxwell and Noah were excited for the challenge! Ryder and Olivia took turns creating codes while the other one followed it to make sure it was right! Way to go!

There are so many benefits to learning how to code. Coding is a type of computer science... it's essentially programming! It teaches kids to be problem solvers while fostering computational and sequential thinking along with curiosity. Once we practiced coding off screen, it was time to take it to the computer! We played a game on the computer called "The Foos", where you have to help the character get to where he needs by using certain functions, such as running, jumping, and using crates to get higher.

They have been loving this game, and we are excited to introduce some more coding games with them! :)
