Weekly Challenge/Monday Learning

Hi everyone,

I hope you all had a great weekend! Here is the weekly challenge for this week :) (click to enlarge)

I'm sure most of you received the robo call of going in this week to get your child's belongings. I have no idea what this is going to look like. Once I receive more information, I will let you know, and you can also follow the Gatestone website for more information. I will be in the school Monday (tomorrow) packing up everything for your child (spare clothes, artwork, journals, epipens, etc.) I will be placing these bags in their cubbies/lockers. Please do not enter the classroom any further than this. Once again, I'll pass along more info once I get it!

Monday's Learning:

Literacy: Ask your child to identify the beginning sound in the following words. Remember, you want them to tell you the SOUND and not the letter. As an extension, they can tell you the letter that makes that sound.

- their name
- mop
- leg
- wet
- ball
- toy
- vet
- pug
- den

Practice writing the following sight words down: I, a, am, can, see, the, it, is

Mathematics: Practice printing your numbers 1-10, or up to 20 if you can :)

Have your child explore this online number rack: https://apps.mathlearningcenter.org/number-rack/

We use this in class almost everyday during our daily math talks. Watch this video for ideas on how to use it. I will do a video lesson this week that they can participate in! :)

Picture Post!/Quarantine Questionnaire!

Here are some pictures of our friends from this week, plus their quarantine questionnaires! I LOVED watching them! If you didn't get around to it, DON'T WORRY! Don't feel pressured to do it. It's optional, and if you wish to do it, you can send it to me whenever you have a moment and I will post on Friday's picture post :)

Navraj was busy this week! He wrote a note back to Vuk and did lots of reading. I hope you enjoyed the Mother Bruce book! Great job, kiddo!

Saira was busy doing lots of work this week, including making a bracelet! It looks beautiful, great job! Here's her Quarantine Questionnaire I miss seeing you paint pictures. You're so lucky you have a pool!

Here's Weston's Quarantine Questionnaire! I can't believe you've learned how to ride a dirt bike, that's amazing! I love freezies, too :)

Here are the answers for Stefan's!

Wouldn't going to Cuba right now be amazing?! I wish! Your friends miss playing with you too, Stefan! I didn't know you played the piano!? Amazing! <3

Here's Caleb's Quarantine Questionnaire! I love that you enjoy going on the elliptical, that's hilarious, haha. I went to Mastermind a few days ago ;) So many fun toys!

Here's mine! My first one had some audio problems so I had to redo one today :D

If you need anything, please e-mail me at mpliura@hwdsb.on.ca. Next week we will be back to daily learning activities :) Enjoy your weekend!

Sounding out Words

Hi families,

I made my own "blending board" at home. A "blending board" is a binder that has different sounds in it that you can flip through to make different words to practice sounding them out. I made a video on how to make one at home, OR if you don't want to I made a short video lesson that your child can watch and participate in :)

Making One ^

Note: I forgot to add how many cards you need. You need 38 index cards. Here are the letters you would write:

Beginning Sound: B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, R, S, T, V, W, Y, Z
Middle Sound: A, E, I, O, U
Ending Sound: B, C, D, F, G, J, K, L, M, P, S, T, V, Z

Extension Activity ^

Beginning Sound: BL, BR, CL, CR, DR, FL, FR, GL, GR, PL, PR, SC, SK, SL, SM, SN, SP, ST, SW, TR, TW, SH, CH, TH, WH
Middle Sound: AI, EE, EA, OA, AR

(I would just start with those!)

Caleb is listening and reading books on Raz Kids!

Weston working on his spelling activity. Great job!

Ava got a new puppy (Cona) that she wanted to share with you. Have a great weekend!

Friday May 22nd

Literacy: Listen to Mrs. Barber's read aloud "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus"!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfgUJBEiBfQ&feature=youtu.be

Practise printing some of your letters. How is printing your name coming along? Are you able to start with an uppercase letter and do the rest in lowercase? Keep trying! Always remember to start at the top, hold the pencil close to the bottom, and use medium pressure :)

Mathematics: Play the Marble Math addition game on Abcya.com. If needed, students can drag the marbles down to help them. When counting them altogether, encourage them to "count on". For example, 5+3... count on 3 more from 5 (5..... 6, 7, 8) INSTEAD of starting from 1. Always count on from the larger quantity to save you time :) (we've practised this in class)

Thursday May 21st

Literacy: Read a story to your child. Ask them to draw a picture of what their favourite part is.

Have your child try to spell these CVC words (consonant vowel consonant). Remind them there is a beginning, middle, and ending sound.

1. Tell them the word
2. Have the child segment in (break it up into 3 parts)
3. Match the letter to those sounds
4. Write those letters on paper!

jug
mat
sun
kid/cid
top
led

OR try this method :)

Mathematics: When your child is eating breakfast, a snack, anything, ask them to guess how many bites it will take for them to finish their snack. Try to guide them to a reasonable guess. If they say 100, that's probably not going to happen! 8? 10? 20? Try with all of your meals today :)

Tuesday, 19 May 2020

Wednesday May 20th

Literacy: Read 1 book on raz kids (note: if you practiced recording your reading within the last week I sent you a message with some bonus stars, so check it out!) or 1 book from home- your choice! Can you find any words in it that you know, like and or I? Practice copying those words on paper!

Mathematics: Have your child look at this picture and say, "One of these lego pieces doesn't belong. Which one do you think it is?"

Answer: "The top left doesn't belong because it has 8 circles instead of 4". OR they might say
"The bottom left because it's a square and not a rectangle". Either or are fine!

Music: Mr. McCormack would like you to listen to this song you've learned in class!

Weekly Challenge/Tuesday May 19th

I hope everyone had a nice long weekend!

Here is the weekly challenge (click to enlarge!)

Tuesday's Learning: Watch Miss Pliura's read aloud and work on your printing :)

Mathematics: Print out these subitizing worksheets and do 2! I suggest have your child cut out the pieces on the right first, scramble them up, and then pick 2 number to work on. This will make it more challenging :) If you don't have a printer at home, watch some subitizing videos on youtube <3

Thursday, 14 May 2020

Friday May 15th

Literacy: Play the segmenting game with Miss Pliura and Darwin! ;) Listen carefully to the instructions and try your best! <3

Mathematics: Play a board game with a family member that includes dice! This is the perfect opportunity to practise your subitizing. If you don't have any games that have dice, watch a Jack Hartmann subitizing video on YouTube!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! Hopefully the weather gets nicer :)

Love Miss Pliura

Picture Post!

Hi everyone!

Here are some pictures from our friends this week. It's great to see everyone working hard at home (and yes, playing is working!) ;)

Vuk wrote a message for his friend Navraj! Great job kiddo!

Aaryan's been busy practising his letters and doing his daily activities! Super work!

Weston made a sentence with a compound word - great job!

Navraj has been busy this week! He practiced counting the words in a sentence from our daily activities. Nice job!

Saira watched my read aloud this week and was working on thinking of words with 'in' in them!

She also worked on her scrambled sentence worksheets. Great job!!

Ava's been busy working on spelling her name and watching my read aloud! I love it! Great job :D

I did the sink and float exploration challenge this week! The sponge and lid floated and the rest sank! I also watched the Letter Factory by Leapfrog (on Netflix) to touch up on my letter sounds! ;)
